Apprenticeship

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

~ Helen Keller (1880-1968) ~
American author and political activist
Mentored by Ann e Sullivan

Yoga originates from India. It is a spiritual tradition that traditionally was passed on from teacher to student in the oral tradition. It was often practiced in the “ Guru-Kula” system, where the student lived with the teacher, often from a young age, in order to “live” the teachings and traditions of yoga directly experienced from their teacher

In this day and age, we do not always have the opportunities to live with our teacher within this system. Often, when we graduate from our yoga teacher training, we return home and begin to teach without any guidance. It is through teaching that we gain experience, but this is also when the questions start to come up. Questions about students, the practice and our own understanding of the practice come when we start to go deeper into the complexities of teaching and leading classes. One way to get answers is through your peers and self study. Another way, is to find a teacher and ask to be mentored.

Mentoring is one of the key areas missing in todays yoga community. Every year, many students graduate, through different schools and lineages and look to start teaching. In the yoga tradition, a student was taught until the teacher thought them ready to teach and then they were sent out into the world to teach. They had a deep understanding of yoga through the teachings but also through their own personal practice with their teacher. We are missing this key component in our community now. We expect people to “figure it out” or that by taking more classes, workshops and immersions that they will automatically understand what they need to work on.

Working with an experienced teacher, who will guide you to challenge yourself and teach into your weak points as a teacher, is invaluable. There is much to be said for “figuring it out on your own” but the process of mentoring is a deep and rich connection and relationship that will both challenge and encourage you. And in the end, that is what we are all here for. To lift each other up.
